Scep – you make wise observations.
The real question is whether we are in a 70s style situation with its supply side shocks undermining the economy or a 30s style depression. The economy then of course eventually received a huge stimulus in the shape of a world war – not exactly reproducible or desirable.
Inflation seems unlikely to hit double figures so we are more likely we suffer the South East Asian ten years of pain, under constant fear of bank collapses, and no levers to pull to correct the economy.
If that is the case, social policy is more important than economic policy, to pull us through to the light at the end of the tunnel with some semblance of social cohesiveness.
Gee – that’s going to be popular.

Not International Present Day, when people around the world are united in a shower of excessive consumption.
Jesus lived and died so that we could bring our children up to expect massive gifts from a fat beardy bloke in a red costume. Don’t trust strangers, celebrities or family members who want any sort of creepy physical contact with you – bit you gotta love that Santa guy. He gives you stuff!
I’m looking forward to spending time with the people I care about, but not to all the stress and greed of the present-fest.
Goodwill to everyone, and may God’s peace go with you (as opposed to Santa’s).

15 October, 2012 at 3:01 pm #512067It’s all about finding someone living to fry cos we can’t hang Savile.
The circus has now started properly. Savile now looks like the greatest abuser in our history, as hundreds come forward, and the media think up more and more bizarre ways to keep the story at shock/horror level. Should his family apologise? Should the management of the BBC resign? Did Savile shoot JFK, and what was his role in 9/11? I want these questions answered.
And with the circus, the feeding fenzy. Law suits are prepared to launch at the BBC and every other institution which Savile was associated with. Investigation after investigation – most of them aimed at finding someone (or several someone’s) to blame.
The BBC are doing two investigations. The first is the sensible one into the culture of the organisation, how this could have been missed, and how it can be prevented. The second is into the editorial decision not to show the short piece about Savile a couple of years ago. The second on is only designed to find someone to sack, and if the BBC don’t, the media will do it for them.
What will cure everything for the victims. Perhaps money, people losing their livelihoods and the search to make someone accountable will make the nightmare seem bearable?
Let’s put the victims first and listen to them rather than running round finding a witch to burn. We all know whose to blame – a sophisticated bully and abuser, Jimmy Savile. Let’s put the victims’ stories and their finding a way to come to terms with this at the centre of our attentions.
And we’ve all looked away at moments when other people have been mistreated, even if we haven’t joined in. How are we going to make sure that the attitudes we have towards celebrity and power don’t inadvertently put our children and their children at risk in the future?
As the whole Savile affair, its reporting and how it is managed becomes more and more like a blood lust, how do we do the right thing by the victims and children in the future?

This could be an interesting thread – if everyone is treated with a basic respect. Nobody is supporting abuse of any sort, believe it or not.
Thanks for pointing that out. We do seem to forget it sometimes in the heat of the debate.

Boris for President!
Crikey! so – how would the Tory answer to Billy Bunter help us out of the deficit problem???
How would any politician help us out of the deficit problem?
They would if they could grasp the simple fact that an economy is not a household budget. If you cut and cut to take further demand out of an economy where everyone is sitting on their hands because they are so frightened, it only leads to lower growth, less taxes and a bigger deficit.
We are sitting watching Greece implode and it will carry on for 50 years. They have already made far bigger cuts than we can even imagine but their problem is that the economy just wont grow when you half government spending overnight. It would be cheaper to write off the debts now, given that they are suffering horribly. If you think they aren’t, try not being able to afford drugs to cure a chest infection and watching your mother die because you cant.
The economic advice, even from the IMF is for more stimulus, which is what the Americans did successfully, despite being in a very similar position to us.
____Would a politician help us out of the debt crisis? If they took some proper economic advice instead of trying to look tough, yes they could.
Sad thing is we like them looking tough – just as long as we are lucky enough to hold onto our jobs.
____The only thing that makes me feel better is that we are all in it together. Cos when Dave and George lose their jobs for being incompetent, they will have to sign on and beg for reduced housing benefit to feed their families.
Wont they?

I think, know, a number of people have withdrawn from this thread because they feel it’s become quite personal.
It’s an emotive topic, people are bound to get passionate about it, but where has it got personal? Me saying that I hoped that if poli ever got called up for jury service I hoped she wouldn’t get a case of sexual assault or rape? Look back to the first page…
You hoping that Poli never gets called up for Jury service on a case of sexual assult or rape is suggesting she is and would be incompetent in delivering a verdict you found right….that is quite personal……and although whilst I disagree with lots of Poli’s comments she seems to be forever having to defend what she posts on this topic…..and no, it’s not debate when one persons view is constantly put down or indeed a suggestion like jury service is brought into it
I’ve thought it’s been quite good as a debate. There have generally been fewer insults than on some other threads which can’t be bad.
I know it’s a sensitive subject, but equally I do think however Poli has suffered a bit of pretty personal stuff for saying things other people think are wrong.
Without contrary views, we’d all be ranting about the same things, and I couldn’t bear to think about poor Terry getting even more bored than he is now.

……….and maybe the opinions of the women and the men are so very different?
Just thought about that.
There have been differences of opinion on the thread but I am not sure it breaks down on male/female grounds at all. More than one of my female acquaintances first comments on this is how much it is all going to cost, and wondering whether front line Police time is the best spent looking into hundreds of allegations. That probably has more to do with the line of work they are in than the fact they are female.
There certainly hasn’t been hasn’t been any more or less sympathy here for the victims or Savile himself from women or men.

I don’t think the Tory Right is the way forward, even when it dresses itself up as a clown.
I agree with you (for once..). UKIP is the way forward.
Interesting point, Terry, and now I’m going to pick your knowledge –
what is the difference between UKIP and the Tory Right in your opinion – in terms of politics? Briefly, and I’ll try not to make cheap debating points, honest.
Who cares what the difference is..? I just want out of Europe.
You could always move to South America!
