On the face of it it sounds dreadful doesn’t it… but there are good reasons to allow mothers to look after their babies in prison…. not all prisons btw only ones that can provide a suitable environment for instance open prisons.
Women are allowed to request their children to live with them if they are pregnant when they enter prison or if they have young babies…. children are not allowed to be with their mothers in prison in the UK above the age of 18 months of age.
Prisons can be a good place for both mother and baby its well know that the first months of life are critical for the emotional, intellectual and physical development of babies.
Prisons provide mothers with activities known to lead to good parenting skills in a drug free environment. Provide young mothers who may be from a chaotic lifestyle outside prison to create a positive bond with their babies and encourage confidence in their mothering skills.
The prison can also provide a one to one monitoring service, oh that baby Peter could have had that!
The alternatives to babies being taken from their mothers just dont seem viable to me, unless of course the child is placed with its father and he is capable and loving.

Lives too far away now since I have moved and is 12 years my junior so maybe not a good move to go backwards. Still it is flattering :)
