Yes, it’s true Gaz that kids are only taught what the powers that be want them to know. You only need look at the Creationism v Evolution debate to see that.

Couldn’t agree more about indoctrination – that is there from the cradle to the grave and serves to prove we are not truely free.

Why is it that they have been giving Sex Education yet we rank up on high regarding teen STD`s and pregnancy ?

I think that is more due to the fact they can get social housing if they have a kid and benefits rather than not knowing about sex. Take those little perks away you will soon see the teen pregnancy rate plummet.

You can lead a horse to water etc…..Educate them 24/7…… Not very much use if the Content is spiked

I agree with that although I think religious indoctrination creating extremists is far more dangerous.

thats exactly what i was asking you, abt that being the whole idea of eduaction, should they be denied it as alot with difficulties never will reach an examination level, so if thats the whole idea of it why would they waste the time and money doing it ?

I believe you actually said kids are taught how to pass exams. Yes they are be being taught knowledge and an exam at the end is a test of that knowledge. To be able to pass that exam is the ultimate aim of academic and vocational education as it currently stands in schools and further education colleges.

In an ideal world, all kids would pass all their exams but the reality is they don’t and won’t and that is for a variety of reasons. Even the brightest kid can go to pieces and flunk an exam, where a kid who has under achieved / not shown promise may put the effort in at exam time and achieve a pass.

Teachers cannot legislate for what is going to happen in an exam so they have to give every kid a level playing field.

And a lot of kids with learning difficulties go on to achieve exam success because there is a greater understanding of the causes and help is available for their exams.

if that is in fact the case, why do we waste good money and time teaching kids that will never be able to achieve any exam results at all?

Because the teachers are not psychic and don’t know who is going to pass an exam or not!

A teacher’s job is to give kids an education with the view to achieving qualifications.

For some kids that will not be the case but with every generation, that will always be the case.

Those with less abilities are entered for exams where they cannot achieve above a certain level. e.g. they can only achieve a C or below.

In some extreme cases a kid might not be entered for a certain exam if they haven’t attained a certain standard throught the course.

Even if exams passes aren’t achieved, kids still get an education and skills they will use and need throughout their life such as being able to read and write!

You’ll have some kids with learning difficulties who may / will never pass an exam – should they be denied the chance of developing thier minds and skills because of this?

I think he’s right that because of the way school’s performances are measured, the teachers adapt a “teach them how to pass exams” approach, rather than teaching subjects in a way that allows pupils to develop their natural abilities. I know a few youngsters who got very good grades for their GCSE and A’levels but if you asked them something specific from the syllabus five years further on, they can’t remember!

LOL Even the teachers have notes they refer to! I know, I used to be one!
Not many people can remember the ins and outs of everything especially 5 years on!

Yes you teach pupils exam skills such as RTFQ, underlining key words and planning their answers but they need to have the knowledge in the first place to be able to answer the exam questions.

And an exam only tests certain areas from two years of learning – no one knows what those areas are so in order to pass the exam at A Grade, you need in depth knowledge of the whole subject area.

Now unless you then go on to use that knowledge everyday, you soon become rusty and need a refresher.

Even as a teacher, I had to refresh myself on certain areas in order to teach it. My doctor even looks up things when I visit, my lawyer will look up a point of law!

The human memory, does not recall everything verbatim.

I’m not a huge fan of kids but credit where credit is due – stop decrying their achievements.

Do you and poli and QM have kids? If so, do you mock their exam achievements?

Bon Jovi – Someday I’ll Be Saturday Night

And Tuesday just might go my way
It can’t get worse than yesterday
    Thursdays, Fridays ain’t been kind
    But somehow I’ll survive

Hey man I’m alive I’m takin’ each day and night at a time
Yeah I’m down, but I know I’ll get by
Hey hey hey hey, man I gotta live my life
Like I ain’t got nothin’ but this roll of the dice
I’m feelin’ like a Monday, but someday I’ll be Saturday night

From the 1960s musical, Bye Bye Birdie:

    Kids!
I don’t know what’s wrong with these kids today!
    Kids!
Who can understand anything they say?
    Kids!
    They a disobedient, disrespectful oafs!
    Noisy, crazy, dirty, lazy, loafers!
    While we’re on the subject:
    Kids!
You can talk and talk till your face is blue!
    Kids!
But they still just do what they want to do!
Why can’t they be like we were,
    Perfect in every way?
What’s the matter with kids today?
    Kids!
I’ve tried to raise him the best I could
    Kids! Kids!
    Laughing, singing, dancing, grinning, morons!
And while we’re on the subject!
Kids! They are just impossible to control!
Kids! With their awful clothes and their rock an’ roll!
Why can’t they dance like we did
    What’s wrong with Sammy Caine?
What’s the matter with kids today!

See? Nothing changes much – one generation moans about the other, lol.

Why do some people think things were so much better in “their day?”

Why do some people think they lived in the “golden age?”

I doubt very much if either poli or QM lived in the golden age of education. I doubt if anyone did. You make do with what is available at the time just like every generation has to.

You cannot apply what happened 30 years ago and try and make it relevant today. Times change, things evolve, everything does unless of course, you live in the countryside. :D

He said, as he fills the shelf again…

Perhaps Mr Quiet’s bitterness is down to envy that he didn’t make do better during his time at school.

I honestly think that teaching standards have improved – I am speaking from experience here.

Gone has the talk and chalk method with kids passively copying down what is written on the board.

Teaching these days is much more interactive and learner focused encouraging participation. Resources and equipment are better as well.

You have to also consider that kids with learning difficulties are now getting the help they need instead of being cast aside as thick. This means they stay in education and achieve better grades.

Mr Quiet is not only decrying the achievements of the kids but the achievements of the teachers as well.
