and it’s well documented I should have been born a blonde :lol:I have to stress though…the word gollywog is offensive because of the word wog….Like Panda i was called it to belittle me, to make it known I am different therefore not accepted, the word is stuck on the end of golly which is a black rag doll…there is no getting away from the word being offensive….and while you say most of us here grew up with gollywogs and didn’t think they were offensive I disagree…..I was at school with people my own age who also grew up with gollywog…many used the word in its derogitory form and even now as adults…people of similar ages to me have quite happily use the word ….that’s my opinion and my explanation to validate my opinion
Sorry Kenty, I didn’t realise the word wog was still being used today, and by adults of all ppl.
Luckily for me, all that racist name calling came to an end when I went to an all girls secondary school in 1985. Whether the fact it was all girls has a bearing, I don’t know.
Fortunately I haven’t experienced any racist name calling since primary school.
I don’t know the reason for that but it seems it’s not down to it dying out completely.
Maybe it’s the area in which I live – there is a high black and mixed white and black population around here. However, there is also a very nasty racist youth gang made up of white youngsters who have physically attacked black and Asian ppl.
Seems I’m just very fortunate.

Absolutely jen i agree 100%. i’ve said this before that people should worry less about what words are being used and more about the context they are used in or towards someone.
Don’t ban the word slap the nasty eejit saying em. People can be just as offensive without using such words and as much of a bully, so yep i agree totally.Some words are offensive…they may not have been offensive years ago…..that doesn’t mean they can be used now….

The word has to be offensive in the first place :roll:You misunderstood what i was saying kenty, smack the eejit for saying whatever they say in a nasty way as a means of abuse, rather than the for word itself,for example, if someone said ur hairs like a gollywogs as in its afro styley, in an innocent manner describing something not being abusive or racist, not belittling the style but describing it, i dont see the harm, if someone says, look at that hair you gollywog idiot, its being said in a racist insulting manner, cr ap example but thats what i mean, the word gollywog itself shouldn’t be shied away from as a word, as has been noticed on here,on this thread, it is nowadays, but after all it was in all of our childhoods, from toys to animation on a jam jar, the gollywog isnt something that should be hidden away from embarrassed by, but using it in a derogatory way should deserve a slapping, yes.
Gollies don’t have Afro hair – it is straight and spikey.
