Why would he want to secure his position when he is already in office? Surely the time for using platitudes to God would be before the voting process begins not with a guaranteed 5 year term ahead.

Another issue is many of these characters have a deluded belief in some sort of afterlife so what fear does a nuclear war hold for someone thinking they will be heading to something better after death… these people are the most dangerous of all as they have nothing to lose in their own minds so this nuclear ” deterrent ” is rendered obsolete.
