DNA evidence alone doesnt convict people- but it gives the police leads to follow up- DNA kick starts good old fashioned police work.
As I’ve said the suicide rate in the Bridgend area is the same as the rest of the country
15 suicides (in the age group concerned) per 100,000 is the national “average”
17 suicides in Bridgend in 12 months and 120,000 people live in the Bridgend area
Not exceptional, not extraordinary, just very tragic, as is any other suicide
But isnt the point these 2 murderers werent on it voluntarily but were identified due to other crimes committed
The London model murder is a prime example- 2 years after she was killed, the police were no nearer finding her killer but they had some DNA- Mark Dixie then gets into a pub fight, is arrested and suddenly you have a matching DNA ID.
Without the police recording DNA following an arrest, this murderer would STILL be free.

For me, DNA givesd the police a direction of travel- they have a “lead”
DNA on its own almost always doesn’t lead to a conviction- but the DNA gives the lead for the old fashioned police work to begin
And in last weeks Ipswich murders and last weeks London model murder case (which was also solved 2 1/2 years later thanks to DNA), neither accused denied being at the scene which they could have done without DNA
as I said- public protection against civil liberty?

The re introduction of the death penalty should be a fundamental cornerstone of any manifesto at the next election
It won’t be of course but we can but hope
I shudder to think how many murders, rape, assaults etc could be siolved tomorrow if we suddenly had a national DNA database
Instead, we have murderers, rapists walking free in our midst and unlikely to be caught

“If there was a national database of everybody then we would solve more crime, of that there is absolutely no doubt”
The choice belongs to us- more, publicised criminal solutions will mean less crime committed-
