I tapped his hat with my porky fingers.

There is the small applause

I am down at the end of lonely street
and a jump suit rots in a southern coffin
as people pay their respects to a barrage balloon.I sit here,
I can feel the evening shrinking me

Jamaica, that melting pot of so many different cultures; a small island in the Caribean that is responsible for so much fantastic and innovative music. Check out what the sound engineers and original dj’s were doing long before we had hip-hop or rap. But then as in the case of blues (and humanity) you can trace these rhythms all the way back to Africa. Black music tends to accentuate the off-beat and, quite simply, I love it.

My apologies…. reading that back it sounds a bit abrupt.
What I meant was it is not My thread, but with time will gather infulences and links from all, I never introduced it as my project, nor did I mean it to just be about one genre, thats just how the first couple links came up.
I will be adding more (you so know that!)…. Im going to be looking for some gregory Isaacs…. etc, so Jamaica will be embraced, in more ways than one.
Then again, I may even add some Blondie (debbie harry)…. who “rapped” before she did?

Shazza, you me chat-mate and it’s cool. You’ve started a great thread and its appreciated. I wasn’t criticising you but do like to differentiate between the originals and what got produced here in England. I have too much love for the music not to do otherwise. I’m like that. And I like ‘Rapture’ too but know what the lovely Deborah was playing at there. now….

no one can say definitively, as the mento offbeat was around for years before any of this.
But many would acknowledge Prince Buster’s ” Oh Carolina” …..recorded 1 9 6 0 . . . . . as the prototype ska record. Then we had a few years of ska through the early years of Jamaican independence until the hot summers of the mid-sixties slowed the dance beat right down into rock-steady (cue Desmond Decker)…….. then things becamer even slower with the effect of hippies and the new electric bass – so important – and the influence of militant black rights, until some new vibes started appearing on the Kingston sound systems around 1968, a very sticky beat aimed at ya like a machine gun……
This was the birth of reggae and over the next ten years it started to appear all over the world. From a novelty act such as ‘My Boy Lollipop’ we had now progressed to a new musical form, popularised by Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. Only the original punks truly tapped into this ghetto music, and with good reason.
Two Tone was second-generational and Madness’s first record was ” The Prince”……..a tribute to the great Buster.
