already done that, the language setting is in english but every thing else is in german, all the icons the start bar and all the folders are labled german, i have had a look on a friends computer and it mentioned a unicode to change the version of vista to english is that right?

go for a wireless machine as they can be used in any room, i would suggest an acer for a first. laptop they are fairly priced and they have a good lifespan.
