Now I’ve not met many of these in my life, but those I have met seem to fit the characters in this movie by Terence Davies, Distant Voices, Still Lives.

They are tough as nails, sharp as a Stanley knife, and big soppy softies – all in one person.

I haven’t met that many (though there are a few in jc), but am I wrong?

    (ok I am generalising)

Brilliant film by the way..about Liverpool working class life in the 1940s and 50s, set as a musical. Already in dvd, the British Film Institute are bringing out the 4k bluray soon.

    This is a brief trailer

Well I assume toffee has something to do with Everton ? but still never heard of ma bushel, I even googled the name. Do yo mean ma boswell, some character off a program called Bread ?  If so, no I don’t like her at all and didn’t really watch it, ridiculous stereotyping in my humble opinion. Sorry !! Programs like that are why idiots presume people from Liverpool all wear pinnys , have curlers in 24/7 and are all poor !

The area of Everton in Liverpool had two toffee houses. The earlier one was owned by old ma Bushell the original toffee women, her shop was situated where the old everton grounds used to stand in Anfield. Ma Bushell would sell her toffee to passing football fans from far and wide doing a roaring trade.

Then we had mother Nobletts toffee shop which was nearer to the new grounds of Goodison and her being the mother of innovention made her toffee and covered it in a hard mint shell and called it ” the everton mint ” old ma bushells sales slumped  due the the long distance that seperated her shop from the new grounds. Not to be outdone by Mother Nobletts everton toffees Ma Bushell gained permission from the leaders of the club to allow her to hand out her toffees inside the grounds as they waited for kick off. Ma Bushell would send her beautiful young grand daughter Jemima Bushell dressed in her best clothes carrying a basket full of toffees. And so was born the tradition of the Everton toffee lady. Nowadays for each home match, a different girl is selected from the ranks of Evertons supporters club to perform this time honoured task.  Story as told to me by Liverpool historian Frank Carlyle. Top 2 pics are Ma Bushells toffee shop. The second two are Mother Nobletts. One of her old shops still stands today On London Road Liverpool. During some recent  restoration work workmen came across the old painted on advert for her toffee shop it was decided to leave it exposed for all see.
