Large wind turbine = 2 Megawatts
    Sizewell B nuclear power station = 0.85 Gigawatts = 850 Megawatts. 850 / 2 = 425.

So 425 large wind turbines would produce an equivalent output to Sizewell B. Like I say, dozens of turbines – 37.1 dozen to be precise!!!

However the wind does not always blow and nuclear power stations are not always operating at maximum output.

People say air travel is safe and yet hunderds of people die each year around the world in airliner crashes. I don’t see what the difference is with nuclear power stations. Sure, there’s been Chernobyl and Three Mile Island but think of the number of deaths in plane crashes since the beginning of nuclear power generation. Since the World’s first nuclear power station, Calder Hall in Cumbria, opened in 1956, over 62,000 people have died in air crashes. An interesting aside here is that, according to the air accident statistics I was looking at, in 1974 precisely 1974 people died in plane crashes.

However I’m not convinced we should build more nuclear power stations. Wind turbines (onshore and offshore), wave, tidal flow, tidal barages etc could produce a major proportion of our electricity if we were prepared to put the money where the mouth is. Increased energy efficiency too should be used to reduce consumption and narrow the gap.

Anti-environmentalists have taken to pointing out how much energy it takes to manufacture a wind turbine. That is an irrelevant in the energy comparison debate since it would almost certainly take much more energy to build, run and decommission a nuclear or coal-fired power station than it would to erect the dozens of wind turbines to provide a similar power output.

I’m puzzled! What sport are we talking about anyway? Football? Rugby? All the same to me!!!

My advice is if you’re sure you don’t like the Welsh don’t go to Cardiff! (I am about 25% Welsh by ancestry)

I dislike big cities so I avoid going to any of them if I can!

As well as the jail sentence, he should have been PERMANENTLY banned from driving. There are other celebs who have caused fatal or serious injury accidents, including at least one other prominent boxer, one TV actor, one member of a 70’s pop band – I could go on.

Having sounded off above about the over-representation of Scots in the government of Britain, I hasten to add that I do not subscribe to the notions or Englishness, Scottishness or Welshness as happily as I do to that of Britishness for all of us.

If the overtly Scottish and decidedly unappealing Gordon Brown becomes leader of New Labour I reckon it will damage their chances at the next election. Blair is Scottish too, but not obviously so, and his predecessor the Late Joihn Smith was Scottish. The Lib Dems’ Menzies Campbell and his predecessor Charles Kennedy are also Scottish.

I’m not anti-Scottish but we not seeing over-representation of Scots in government at present?

In general, foreign nationals who have committed serious or medium-level crimes should be deported after serving their sentences.

There should be safeguards against them being returned to countries where they face undue persecution but to a certain extent it’s a case of ‘tough, they should have thought of that before they committed the crime!’.

But sometimes people are subject to laws that extend across national boundaries.

Take a hypothetical case: A Saudi citizen in UK converts from islam to communism and is convicted of inciting hatred against muslims in the UK.
After serving a sentence in a UK jail, if he were deported to Saudi Arabia he would probably face the death penalty for apostacy (leaving islam) under sharia law.

If the BNP were in power in this country it might ensure that we never get islamic sharia law here BUT BNP-style justice would probably be just as brutal and barbaric!!!!

I see that George Galloway’s “Ba’ath Party of Britain”, alias Respect has gained 11 seats in Tower Hamlets. The East End of London is clearly something of a hotbed of extremism!!
