Several times the losing candidate got more votes than the winner – look at the 2000 election, when Gore got more votes than Bush.
If there’s violence, it’s Trump whipping it up
It must feel odd having a choice between a guy with a dead hedgehog on his head and a woman who likes to dress in a binliner.
But the binliner gets my vote all the way…[Read more]

Pete,
these boards have always been ehavy.
I found themvery ehavy over the summer, tryng to handle my dad’s death while every post of mine was met with the same three or four people caricaturing and abusing me.
That’s how it is. We take the rough wiht the smooth.
The mix of serious (sometiems verys erious) and jokey are what make these boards…[Read more]

Is this going to be another version of the Great Debate between thin and annette curtain.
I hope so. Now that was one of the classics of JC.
It went on and on, got intensely repeptitive and boring, but after several years it became compulsive reading and very, very funny.
Thin is wicked, though. Wicked. Take care, Somer, you seem all right. You…[Read more]

Drac,
welcome back to the boards.
I’m so pleased that you’re out of hospital and recovered. There are precious few people here who take debate about issues seriously without getting involved in insults, and you are one of them.
I don’t really know about same-sex relationships. I can understand how gender roles work in them. But I also assume…[Read more]

I am more than happy with a serious debate, but that involves playing the ball, not the person.
If you are at all capable of genuine debate about an issue without throwing personal aspersions around, let me put it simply.
I argued against the idea that the Second World war was responsible for the change in women’s status. I said ti was in 1955…[Read more]

Many thanks, laine. TYou don’t know the actual source of the figures??
I’m not a sociologist or anyting, but it would be interesting to know.
Is it a government document, or just figures held by your workplace locally?

well, that’s up to the Supreme Court now.
If there’s no pain, then there’ll be no problem with brexit coming.
But there is something called the Rule of Law, which is why the governemnt has to appeal to the Supreme Court.
Let’s wait until mid-December to find the final verdict.

That’s for sure, but they were the ones who led people to beleive you could leave the EU without any pain, more you could leave and gain money.
A cruel deceit.
The point to remember here is that it’s not whether Brexit, but how. My guess is that most people don’t want to screw the judges and parliament – they are essential to the balance which…[Read more]

I’m not in favour of another referendum, Reason, and there’s little demand for one, unless there is a decisive shift of mood among the British public to remain or rejoin the EU, and even then a general election will be enough.
But if you want to see where the toffs are – try jacob Rees-Mogg, Sir Edward leigh, Borish Johnson, Nigel Farage etc etc…[Read more]

Laine,
thanks for the stats. Where are they from?
Men have traditionally been ashamed to report abuse, which can be very violent indeed. Women can have a refined sense of cruelty (verbal and physical) in my experience.
So despite all the changes in domestic relationships – and they have been dramatic in the last 50 years – are men and women…[Read more]

somer, some people are extremely sensitive to their own pride and feelings, but are so inebriated with their own sense of self-importance as to believe that they have a mummy-given right to insult other people.

That’s precisely the point.
Parliament will vote for Brexit – a referendum dcided it.
The judges did not rule on Brexit. They ruled on how Brexit will be negotiated – not by the Crown, but by the Crown-in-Parliament, in accordance with the established Bill of Rights.
The referendum merely decided that Britain should leave the EU. Nothng more;…[Read more]

I have the figures somewhere, but after both wars women were displaced by the returning soldiers from the vital war work they had taken on. It was after about 1955 that women began to move ito work in a big way, often doubling up their paid work with the unpaid work of looking after their husband and children. This was a result of the postwar…[Read more]

Read the thread, arc.
As Reason noted, it was Dominic Grieve, the Tory ex-Attorney General, who drew the parallel.
I am not a Tory, but I see the point here.
Three High Court Justices unanimously dedided that the Crown-in-Parliament should control Brexit, not the Crown (through its agent, the Governemnt) in isolation from Parliament.
The…[Read more]
