There’s nothing sacred about a poem. If anyone disses a good poem, they show themselves up. The poet is like anyone else here when faced what carping – shrug it off, ignore it. Why is that so hard?

His suffering certainly made him a powerful symbol of racial oppression in South Africa (and the world) in the 20th century. His country is violent, corrupt and brutal, but at least it’s removed the ugly blot of apartheid, and he’s a symbol of that removal too.

you can scan very formal poems such as these quite easily – read them aloud and see if they have a rhythm
