To me, the great tragedy of this thread is the way it quickly degenerated from the lovely and moving verses of Rose, who began it so beautifully.

Maybe because you wouldn’t inwardly accept her condemnation of you??
She was so manipulative that it was obvious to you that she was playing games? You developed an inward strength to fight on regardless, perhaps.
Just speculating.

Soph,
The love of your bloke can certainly do it.
But also looking out for others, to help others, to lift them up when they fall.
I’d love to do this, but so often fail, my own failures of character being part of that.
To my mind, if you think only of yourself you get sucked into an emotional vortex
That isn’t the same as selfish.…[Read more]

You and your friends are very good at telling other people what their feelings and motives are. If the same were done to you, there would be an explosion.
I don’t love the EU, find the actions of the ECB (plus the World bank and the IMF) in putting Greece through its agony as repulsive, but I call for reform on a Europe-wide basis. I’m an…[Read more]

Actually, nobody (least of all me) has the power to scare anybody into a 2nd referendum.
We live in a parliamentary democracy. That means parliamentary sovereignty. The 2016 referendum was an advisory referendum. The advice, by a narrow majority, was to leave the EU.
Neither I nor the EU will have anything to do with the decision to have a 2nd…[Read more]

Well, perhaps they’re doing such a good job because the No-Deal is very scary.
I’m sure there will be emergency arrangements – there’ll have to be –
but in what way will it not be seriously damaging???
Iif you have different facts other than the ones I’ve been reading, I’m listening very intently.

Sorry, why is it tosh?
Let me put it at its simplest.
What I said was that the EU rules meant that there could be no constitutional change without a referendum.
The referendum said NO, and therefore there was no constitutional change.
There was no second referendum.
What happened instead (a move I described as dangerous) was an…[Read more]

Remember it was may who was responsible for whipping up feelings about immigration and refugees when she was at the Home Office, creating the ‘hostile environment’ policy, sending vans out with ‘you are not welcome here type’ slogans painted on them, and creating the conditions for the dreadful suffering imposed on the Windrush generation.

I said that this is an important point, and that I would answer it when I found the time…
The post points to a real problem of democracy at EU level, but creates a myth of a bullying EU in doing so.
Actually, bullying by the EU is not what actually happened. Something very important took place, but it wasn’t EU bullying.
Under EU rules, a…[Read more]

I’m prepared to place good money on a bet that Mrs May will not be thinking of me as she sits drinking pimm’s anywhere in the world
Everything sis till to play for if May’s deal fails – if. Even the catastrophe of a No-Deal Brexit.
If the majority say we should leave with no deal, then that’s what will happen, and God help us all.
If the…[Read more]

@ Reason,
Well, I doubt there will be a no-deal, but
we could walk into it by default.
If parliament rejects may’s deal, there will be an attempt to get an election by Labour. No chance! The Fixed Term Parliaments act make that very difficult, and the MPs aren’t going to vote for Christmas.
A referendum is more likely – eventually – for one…[Read more]

That’s right, though I don’t think I put it as getting us a good deal??
They were trying to bend over backwards to find an accommodation over the Irish border, accepting that checks could be made within the English mainland. This was rejected by the DUP.
I was making the point that they would dearly love to bully us, but we were doing a…[Read more]

Reason, I really can’t see how she’s been planning all this. The vote on the 11th, or maybe a second vote later on, could well end her period in office.
She genuinely thinks it’s the best deal, given the strength of an angry EU.
I really can’t see how any other Brexiteer could do it better, short of a catastrophic No Deal, which may happen…

When you’re a newcomer in JC, it can be hard, Linda. You had it really hard, people denying you were American or a woman, and even claiming that you were milky. The wonderful minds of JC, hey?
Well, you’ve fought and you’re established now. Get ready for the roller-coaster of life as a JC regular.

As usual, a great post, Soph.
You seem to have avoided depression by having strong community and family roots, and you think of others first, anyone can see.
But many of us become isolated from our community and suffer strains within the family as a result. As you say, you have to work really hard and with a lot of help to move forward.
What…[Read more]

Actually, May has done her best trying to do the impossible. Nobody want to end in the brexit mess we’re in, and to call it a conspiracy just doesn’t wash.
She’s been trying to leave the EU and avoid a hard border in Ireland, and it’s proving impossible. The result is to leave the UK tied to the EU for an indefiniete period in practice, paying…[Read more]

Well, I take you seriously, Jamie

CBT isn’t the big saviour which was touted about it when it first appeared.
I was told a few years ago by a woman who was then in charge of CBT locally that it can get you back to a plateau, but then it stops being useful.
Thus – when you have that type of depression, you collapse as a…[Read more]
