You could have fooled me.
Has anyone here been inside a modern prison?
I was in a high-security prison (as a non-inmate) over a period of time in the late 1990s – it didn’t strike me as a holiday camp. I wouldn’t choose to stay there.
The overcrowding in prisons ha reached danger proportions from what I hear – life for most prisoners is…[Read more]

What is clear is that for all your talk of seeking intelligent conversation, you can’t conduct it.
I know of some people from an anti-fascist organisation in the North (still going after all these years) who spend all their time calling the fascists and Tommy Robinson supporters, ‘pedos’, and getting called ‘pedos’ by the Tommy Robinson people…[Read more]

Well, that’s certainly true of Mooosey, and I’ve accepted it. Don’t think it’s because of anythng other than politics?
This isn’t a dating site, rudeboy. I come on here to discuss and argue, with women as well as men. I rarely visit the chatroom, boy.
You claim you want intelligent discussion, yet you come on ehre continually throwing…[Read more]

All this girly talk and cissy men/nancy boys who prefer the company of women must really make rudeboy sick.
If someone prefers the company of men, I don”t mind, actually. They’re not going to get any brickbats from me.
For a lot of guys, a woman is there to serve in the kitchen and in bed, and they then go down to the pub for talk with real…[Read more]

How did this get from a disucssion of a poem about abuse to an expression of abuse?
Dostoevesky’s novel is an expressin of Christian ehtics. How come you put Dostoevsky on a level wiht Mickey mouse and Donald Duck?
You ought to read more serious literature.
I don’t worry about whther a novel is Christian or not. I’m just concerned that it’s…[Read more]

nope, with possibly some exceptions.
We’ve had examples of innocent people being hanged.
Also two crimes – and killing someone is a crime whether an individual or the State does it – don’t make justice.
If someone close to me was killed, then my reaction would be that I miss them and want them back. That’s my reaction to quite a few people,…[Read more]

a good title for the thread, mister q.
This site can get pretty rough, and even the thickest of hides can get a bit bruised occasionally.
You’ve come under a lot of scorn, but you’ve stuck your ground and won a place on th boards for as long as you care to hold it.
But you do have a sense of humour which doesn’t go down well with some others…[Read more]

well, if so, a bored pretentious fraud.
I mean..
check it out..
I point to Dostoevsky’s The Possessed and the Stavrogin story about abuse, and it’s turned into the fact that I’m a pervert.
When I ask you, you tell me that you haven’t actually read Dostoevsky’s The Possessed.
I am being condemned for being a pervert by someone who hasn’t even…[Read more]

actually, it’s too late to scrub that comment.
I now wish that I hadn’t written it.

Sorry, as you’re not reading what I say, you’ve not noticed that I was talking about Dostoevsky, not the Bible.
I’m much more critical of the Bible than you are, especially the New Testament, as I have more knowledge of it. It’s not my template. But that’s not relevant to this thread is it? We’re talking about the character of Stavrogin in The…[Read more]

ah, well, that saying is central to Dostoevsky, a deeply Christian writer who is said to have inspired Einstein to develop his relativity theory.
His novel, Crime and Punishment, is based on Christian morality with regard to murder.

And that really is the point. You hadn’t read The Possessed, but you assumed that it proved that I was a pervert, or at least had a pervert’s interest in literature.
Dostoevsky deal with the rape in retrospect, and it is given half a sentence – “After I had finished” was Stavrogin’s confession. The horror comes in teh child’s reaction – ‘I…[Read more]

Who’s giving their oopinion as facts, mister q?
I assert my opinion strongly. That doesn’t mean to say I’m right, or wrong for that matter. I assert it strongly because it forces someone who doesn’t agree to define their terms and sharpen their argument in a way which should be beneficial – though they often take things personally and resort…[Read more]

just noticed this.
I remember the King Strongbow piece. I found it very disturbing because it was so salacious.
Do you think Dostoevsky’s account in The Possessed is salacious??
It was certainly cut out by the Tsarist censor in the 1870s, but cutting it out weakened the novel.
The novel had opened with Stavrogin haunted by some unexplained…[Read more]

Rudeboy,
I’m just repeating what somebody told me quite a while ago.
In real life, as on here, I prefer the company of women. I do have some very close male friends, but very few. I don’t like the general camaraderie which lends itself to football talk and disdains emotional intimacy.
Mooosey is someone for whom I have great respect, and even…[Read more]

So, as I suspected…
The politics of Der Sturmer, the politics of La Lanterne and Je Suis Partout, the nastiest, most degraded politics of the Far Right.
You can’t defeat my politics in terms of logic. You can’t defeat it in terms of bullying. So make something horrible up and make it stick by constant repetition and innuendo.
