STV sounds like a venereal disease. It’s much better than the d’Hondt system, I grant you, but there are still some real problems with it.

The degree of problem depends on the system used to elect the MP – constituency or party list or, like the Germans, a mix. I like the present first-past-the-post. not just because it’s simpler and we’r used to it, though that’s important. It’s just that we have more control over who we vote for – tactical voting becomes a possibility. In practice, the parliament isn’t very democratically chosen, but the government is.
STV can be used with any voting system, including first past the post.
