I think very small children need clear instructions and boundaries. Mixed messages and wavering boundaries make them insecure, and insecure children grow into insecure adults. My one cardinal rule was to keep the tough stance for the important things, and on them to never waver. My god pester power tested me to the limit though!!!! And still does!
I think that we are straying slightly from the main topic which is how to handle children who (through either nuture or nature) become a danger to themselves and to society. What do we do when children ignore the accepted rules of our society and just run amok doing exactly as they please without a care for the consequences? And I have to say that to give a teenager a small sentence because he has said he is sorry is the sign of a Judge who hasn’t worked out how to get his dog to sit and stay yet.

31 January, 2010 at 1:56 pm #429763I agree with you both that ADD has become a kind of excuse for bad behaviour. And I also agree that some parents don’t discipline their children effectively. I love the idea of talking to them like puppies, when my daughter was tiny, thats what i did too!!! :) The sit and stay command doesn’t work any more although she still responds to NO if I say it forcefully enough :D

Thats quite sweet.
31 January, 2010 at 10:47 am #429619Love comes in many shapes and sizes. I think it is possible to love more than one person, but not be in love with more than one person at a time. But, I am only speaking for myself because I am sure there will be people out there who can. The human spirit is capable of many things.
31 January, 2010 at 10:39 am #429760Nurture certainly can make monsters!!! Spoiled brat type ones, and ones who lash out and become wife beaters.
But Nurture, as panda says, can also give us good people, kind caring wonderfully emotionally mature adults who contribute to society in a very good way.
Let us not forget that we are talking about a small minority.
But that minority is growing and the paper is full of sickening stories, such awful things are being done that it breaks my heart.30 January, 2010 at 11:28 pm #430329@(f)politics? wrote:
*have worn my slippers in the yard and my wellies to tesco’s many a time so ner :!:
A question though to the perfect dressers out there, if you wear your slippers around the house, but you need to walk down your garden path to get your washing off the line on a nice summers day, do you change out of your slippers into outdoor footwear ? or just nip out in your slippers ??Well if its raining and I’m rushing out there to get my washing so it doesn’t get wet, i take all my clothes off of course and go out as nekked as the day I was born. No point getting my negligee and fluffy mules ruined by the rain now is there
If its a sunny day…. I do the same thing…for the vitamin D of course :D
30 January, 2010 at 2:54 pm #429750I think that is the point some of us have been making Pete… that some people have good upbringings and still turn out bad. Some people have terrible childhoods full of pain and deprivation and become nobel prize winners.
I don’t know what makes some people do what they do, but i do think that you will find children who pull the legs off insects and fry flies with magnifying glasses, and tie bangers to cats tails, and you will find children who rescue cats from drowning, who save small animals from certain death, and who cherish every living thing. And THAT personality trait is something I think people are born with.
30 January, 2010 at 11:56 am #430322Whats wrong with a decent pair of white silk pyjamas and some feather adorned mules? Nobody would complain in Tescos if people went shopping with a fake fur coat and nothing underneath!!! I do tend to agree with you kenty about the slippers though… you should have two pairs, one for round the house and the other pair for shopping in.
:D
