I have just read an interview the victim gave to a Spanish newspaper where she states she is annoyed at organizations like Amnesty International and the British Government for intervening in matters they dont understand.

She states “Across parts of the Middle East and South Asia, acid-throwing attacks on women are appallingly commonplace, usually as a form of revenge for the spurning of sexual advances, or marriage proposals”

Her main reason for pressing for an eye for an eye punishment was to set a precedent. “My intention is to ask for the application of the law not just for revenge but also so that no other woman will have to go through this. It will set an example.”

Maybe she has a point and we should keep our noses out of other peoples cultures?

I dont agree with an eye for an eye justice but I must admit I think we need to be more creative with our punishments. For me its not enough just to take this mans liberty or money… the crime is simply too evil to forgive it so easily.

I’m not sure what the solution is but the present system does not seem to work does it. Please dont talk to me about rehabilitation for a crime like this, it wont wash as far as I’m concerned. Anyone can say sorry and I wont do it again, his victim will suffer for life…. so what punishment should he be given?

Gosh on my soapbox today :?

Somewhere out there is a true and living prophet of destruction and I don’t want to confront him. I know he’s real. I have seen his work. I walked in front of those eyes once. I won’t do it again.”

Always a huge fan of Cormac Mc Carthy, these words from the beginning of his novel No Country For Old Men never resonated as powerful for me as they did last night, as I watched Kate and Gerry McCann give a live interview on Irish TV.

Looking at Mrs McCann’s wasted figure – her haggard, pained face – her trembling, broken voice – all manifestations of a terrorised, heavy burdened soul, I did wonder how anyone could be so cruel as to ultimately judge these flawed, but devastated and decent people.
I think amidst the clamour, the circus, the frenzied blame game that modern media saturation shovels out, that the true tragedy of this case was lost. And I mean tragedy in it’s most fundamental state. Tragedy as the inevitable consequence of human frailty and error combining with the most diabolical set of outward circumstances.

It makes one think, and think deeply on the very nature of “bad things”, and who or what brings about all the links in the chain to cause them, and just like Sheriff Bell in McCarthy’s novel, struggle to comprehend the enormity of evil in this world.
Therefore, although it is probably understandable to a degree to be absolute in condemnation, to almost scapegoat the horror, as some of the more.. erm “black and white” contributors have been here. It is (and I hope when souls are searched this is at least privately accepted) essentially wrong to demonise this couple.

There is another quote, from a Christy Moore song.. “Only the very safe, can talk about wrong and right”.
We can all say our “should haves / could haves / would haves”, but we weren’t there. Nor are we there now, in that forever darkened place the McCann’s are.
I suggest we hold our children close and thank God for that.

Thank you Sgt…said so eloquently, I agree totally
