I’m still waiting patiently for the bar charts and information showing why people become alcoholics. Why do people become alcoholics or have drug issues? how much of it can be contributed to childhood abuse? its all very well to manipulate information to suit yourself but can we see the ‘truth’ If you are telling me that being sexually abused as a child or young adult is not a factor then I will not only disbelieve you I will laugh at you. Oh I forgot, I am stupid and I have no point and I talk ‘shit’ and I make no sense cos I drink. :yahoo:

People become alcoholics for many reasons.

Sexual abuse as a child is definitely the reason for many.

    But many have other reasons.

If you can show toherwise, then fine.

It just doesn’t fit into what I saw of alcoholics.

I am no sociologist – I do work on intuition and personal experience on these, so am open to ‘scientific’ barcharts etc.

*THUD* *overacted American voice- over from somewhere out of sight …… ” Crash Call !!!! get the cart STAT …. Mooosey has gone down……. apparently Scep said he made a mistake ( gasps of incredulity )…… we have a pulse…. she’s gonna make it ……” sorry about that ;-) The Irony is I hurt my back…. I’m about to drift off into an opiate based sleep, ( thank fuk as I got none last night) stay well people B-)

I always say I’m wrong when I think I’m wrong.

You think I should say I’m wrong when I don’t think I’m wrong?

Sorry to break the spell, but I am starting to think maybe you’re not right in this particular instance, though. :-)

Still, having suffered from a bad back since I was 30, I can only sympathise with your trouble. I genuinely hope that it’s a temporary problem.

So…I’ve looked at it a bit. When you say alcohol is more harmful than drugs – are you talking about harm to others or harm to the user? I can only assume that as there has been mention of a couple of vodkas, we’re talking about harm to the ‘user’ or individual. The graph itself is clearly broken down in to those constituent parts. From what I can see, if you’re looking at most harmful to others (as per the legend on the graph) then yes, your statement true. However, if you’re talking about harm to the ‘user’ (see example above), I think any of the next 3 romp into the lead.

When you say alcohol is more harmful than drugs – are you talking about harm to others or harm to the user?

Hello unicorn and thanks for your question. I am actually talking about both, or neither. The graph has 3 readings. Harm to others in light blue, harm to users in dark blue, and the combined total of BOTH harm to others and harm to users giving a total harm ranking. So in this case the combined harm to others and the user for alcohol is easily highest.

Alcohol is untouchable in the harm it does to others. Double the value of heroin on the list in second place. This is why alcohol is ultimately number one on the list.

As you point out, alcohol is not as harmful as heroin to the user, but alcohol is more harmful to others, you and me, than heroin, crack and meths combined.

Mooosey’s chart is the same chart as mine except hers has more depth in the figures whereby my chart has simplified the figures into harm to user and others. The totals, the rankings are all the same, Alcohol on top with 72 pts and mushrooms on the bottom with 6 pts. The 2 charts are the same.

Think of it like a rugby or football league table. You have 3 readings. Home, away, and the all important combined total. Some teams might be very strong at home and weak away. Or vice versa. Whether they are strong or weak at home or away isn’t really as important as their combined total points and league position at the end of the season.
