That pub in Hornsey I’m sure I went there for bar school many years ago when I was doing bar work at 18.  You got a certificate for attending.  I spent years working for architects in Camden then in Victoria for an Engineering company,  then temped all around London for the Audit Commission and other places.  I live in Cambridge but may need to move back as I miss London, as dirty and expensive as it is, and although I lived in the posher suburbs I do miss working in the centre of London with its bustle and strange people.  I remember  tramp wouldn’t take the sandwiches off me I’d bought for him so I just place them in the bin he was rooting through and walked away.  The song by Lilly Allen LDN sums it all up.  I often say that home is where my crap is, but I truly believe that once a Londoner, always a Londoner.

Other cities which so hyped up are also ‘dirty’ and have their own issues.  I’ve been to Paris and Barcelona – don’t diss my London!!

London is Europe’s dirtiest and most expensive city and also has the worst cuisine, according to a poll of travellers.

The UK capital was also considered to have the worst-dressed locals in a survey of 2,376 European travellers.

Wasn’t me dissing London it was TripAdvisor, must admit ‘ worst-dressed locals’ did raise a smile …..

    B-)

When you posted that first time Mooosey, I kinda knew that London isn’t the most expensive city in Europe, as I happen to know Oslo in Norway is more expensive, as is Copenhagen in Denmark, but I didn’t challenge it. But as you posted again, I thought I’d just double check.

London is way down on the list at number 10, aparently, and Zurich in Switzerland appears to be the most expensive at no.1

    10. London, United Kingdom — “London, the UK capital, fell by 18 places from 6th last year to 24th—its lowest position in the cost of living ranking in 20 years,” the report says. It noted that “the devaluation of the British pound in 2016 prompted a sharp fall in the relative cost of living in UK cities.”

    1. Zurich, Switzerland — Zurich remains the most expensive city in Europe for another year according to the EIU, although it notes that “the relative cost of living has fallen slightly.”

Of course, there will be many different polls and lists, but this one is the first I came across, and seems most recent and quite credible. It could be interesting to check through a few different lists and see what we can come up with. I’m also a little dubious to the credibility and reputability of Trip Advisor as a concrete source of information. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what other polls conclude.

I actually agree that I don’t think it is the most expensive, I do think tho it is one of the dirtiest….

However I wouldn’t worry about it Alfie, its just stuff ‘n’ nonsense, banter. The article is a 2017 article in The Independent. I remember seeing it and as you asked about London I thought I’d use it. Tbf it also said that London had the best parks.

But really, chill, TBH  I don’t really care ……. B-)

It was about 1983, 1984? A group of us went to the pub

Amazing. I would have been a youth going into the Shaftesbury about that time. Maybe our paths crossed in there. It’s likely that I knew the “gentleman” you refer to, as he would have no doubt been a local.

    Maybe they did, cross.

I did go into the Favourite, but the Shaftesbury was my main drinking hole. You get to know one another by sight.

I can’t remember the guy who threw the chair really. I remember he was a loudmouth

I’ve not been  in that part of upper holloway for a long time, so it has changed. I have many memories of it, including a cafe where they served mash and pie, someone with a cholestomy bag used to give it a good squelch while you were eating.

Did you ever go to Lee’s caff in Camden, very near the market,  now that was a legend. Now closed.

Scep, there was a Pie & Mash shop further down on Hornsey Rd from The Shaftesbury. I do enjoy a Pie & Mash with the liqour sauce, but not so keen on jellied eels, no thanks.

No, I didn’t go to Lee’s cafe, Camden was “miles” away to me in those days and way out my range. Us youths had to be careful (they still do) about venturing too far away from home, there’s always rival gangs waiting to pounce on strange faces popping up in their terrority. We’d need a big mob to venture into neighbouring areas safely. If it wasn’t bad enough in those days, I dont think it’s got any better these days.

    The Good Old Days !!

I do love the old red brick tenement buildings. We find them all over the country. These were very close to The Favourite in Hornsey Rise, and they were demolished in 1981. I suppose I’m glad I don’t live here or somewhere like this anymore, but you can’t beat the sense of community spirit in places like this. Hundreds of kids running wild, hand me downs, bikes and go karts put together from salvaged scraps and old pram wheels, everybody in and out each other flats, everyone looking out for each other, no need to lock your doors or windows, playing football in the courtyards til long after dark, poor but happy :)

Memories of London – only stayed a few days, as I was on a month long trip around Europe by car.

Recall getting there at night, and having to flag down a cabby to lead me to the place I was staying at, in Tufnell Park, as it was before sat navs and didn’t have a  London map on me.

Also remember an 8 lane road – 4 each way, but dont remember exactly where as it was dark … maybe there was a bridge involved, too..or was I dreaming of the bridge bit?

Another memory was being on the same bus as a guy (skinhead) arguing with one of the windows on said bus and punching it hard; this happened in Oxford Street on a Saturday afternoon.

The same evening I took the tube at about 11.00pm –  full of drunken yobs holding pints of beer.

Another thing I noticed were homeless people sleeping rough in the doorways of some big stores  in city centre.

I didn’t get to see much of the sights tbh as it rained for most of the time I was there.

Only places I recall visiting were Highgate Cemetary, Hyde Park, Camden, Big Ben & Houses Of Parliament, Picadilly Circus & city centre.

I did not visit Buckingham Palace.

I did however visit Harrods and somehow managed to knock over a huge basket of bread in the food department (had a thick jumper tied around my waist, which got caught onto the bread basket whilst I was passing by).

I prayed for the floor to open and swallow me up – but no joy lol
