I have to disagree with sceps comment about American music. Thank god for motown The Temps, Marvin Gaye, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson etc too many to mention. Then we had the amazing sound of the  Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Nirvana, The Doors, Stills and Nash, England Dan and John Ford coley etc, etc, etc. Not only were they good performers many were brilliant song writers. Glad i was introduced to this music as a kid growing up around the night clubs and shebeens of Liverpool 8 Toxteth. Coming from a musical background im forever grateful being exposed to such great music. Alway remember LOVE is the answer  :rose:

Do people always read what they want to read, rather than what is actually written???

I don’t like all the bands you quote (I really don’t like The Eagles), but am a keen fan of Bob Dylan and the Doors, and loved Motown when it appeared.

What I had actually written was

Fortunately, America has antidotes. Its contemporary culture is among the best you can enjoy (I’m thinking particularly of the poetry, but also the music).

That means I like American music.

Music, like food etc, is a matter of individual taste. I love lots of different types of music, and you can’t get further from Val Doonican than Jefferson Airplane or the Velvet Underground. Joni Mitchell is a particular favourite – she’s a Canadian, of course, but her music counts as Californian.

I also dislike a lot of music, but if you like it, fine, I’m not standing in your way. Milky, you listen to what you like. I’m sure most here would dislike some of my music.

In fact, I can still hear music, but it’s a lot of work, so my music is quite limited for physical reasons.

As this thread has turned around some from poverty to music thread.. food.. making me kind of laugh a little as poverty was main focus..sadly it still exist. But amazing sitting here I recalled earlier the many midnight runs our church makes to n.y.c. yearly to help feed the homeless, provide some clothing, and give toiletry items as well. 500 sandwiches made. Home made soups carted in heated big soup thermo pots. We start at 7 p.m. at night preparing and midnight leave..loaded vans, fellowship we discuss areas..the many regulars have seen over the years, wondering if situation has maybe made life better..hoping no longer homeless..arrival we see some..very little of same people, lots of newbies..and information many we knew died thru winter shelter..or merely disappeared. Listening to their stories many say..can’t find work..not skilled..loss of jobs..family kicked them out due to mental disease or addictions drawing on their personal resources.. but the main reason I thought of this story was the many whom all have an ipod, some cd player hooked into ear plugs. Many have that gift of music they listen too…calling music and that technology a true personal friend. Interesting…
