Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic al-Zarqawi ‘Eliminated’ in the board Getting serious 19 years, 4 months ago

Definitely a good thing Zarqawi’s been terminated. I don’t think this will stop the violence but it has eliminated a dangerous and nasty man. Some men can exercise great, almost hypnotic power over others through personality alone – he was probably one such but these men are rare. So finding such a deadly replacement might not be so…[Read more]

I wonder if an alternative to the polythene bag is a bottle of strong disinfectant – so when the inevitable happens and you notice fido is beginning to walk with his back and front feet getting closer together and a hunched back, you have the disinfectant ready to pour on any offensive waste that might appear!!!

Bassingbourne55 replied to the topic Dog Owners….. in the board Getting serious 19 years, 4 months ago

Round here dog poo on the ground has been replaced by polythene bags of dog poo hanging from hedges. I suppose people just sling the bags of poo away since they don’t want to carry it home. In the case of dog poo the best place for it is inside the dog.

I have 3 cats and they use a litter tray so I’m quite au fait with the concept of clearing…[Read more]

I’m self employed and today I have nothing to do work-wise! So today I’m out of work. Also I’m in the process of some ongoing DIY work – painting the interior of my garage white (long job – breezeblocks and masonry paint!). Is there a trade body to which I should turn for advice about painting safety?

Also, if I was at work I wouldn’t be on the…[Read more]

Barring cold nuclear fusion i dont think we have an alternative to nuclear power generation long term

Although I was advocating windpower and other renewables I agree that, realistically, they are unlikely to be able to supply all our power needs all of the time.

Improving energy efficiency might be able to go some way to diminishing the…[Read more]

It is accepted that wind turbines on average are 16/27 efficient = 59%

But is a wind turbine producing 2MW already taking the 59% efficiency figure into account? All power generation systems lose efficiency – nuclear loses energy through heat. Is the 59% efficiency relating to frictional losses etc in the wind turbine or the fact that it only…[Read more]

Crazy situation. I wonder if lots more prisoners will make failed suicide attempts in the hope of getting big compensation.

If the prisoner was denied psychiatric treatment that they clearly needed, then maybe some compensation would be in order but only perhaps a packet of cigarettes or a couple of old copies of Playboy magazine!!

Large wind turbine = 2 Megawatts
    Sizewell B nuclear power station = 0.85 Gigawatts = 850 Megawatts. 850 / 2 = 425.

So 425 large wind turbines would produce an equivalent output to Sizewell B. Like I say, dozens of turbines – 37.1 dozen to be precise!!!

However the wind does not always blow and nuclear power stations are not always operating at…[Read more]

People say air travel is safe and yet hunderds of people die each year around the world in airliner crashes. I don’t see what the difference is with nuclear power stations. Sure, there’s been Chernobyl and Three Mile Island but think of the number of deaths in plane crashes since the beginning of nuclear power generation. Since the World’s…[Read more]

My advice is if you’re sure you don’t like the Welsh don’t go to Cardiff! (I am about 25% Welsh by ancestry)

I dislike big cities so I avoid going to any of them if I can!

As well as the jail sentence, he should have been PERMANENTLY banned from driving. There are other celebs who have caused fatal or serious injury accidents, including at least one other prominent boxer, one TV actor, one member of a 70’s pop band – I could go on.

Having sounded off above about the over-representation of Scots in the government of Britain, I hasten to add that I do not subscribe to the notions or Englishness, Scottishness or Welshness as happily as I do to that of Britishness for all of us.

If the overtly Scottish and decidedly unappealing Gordon Brown becomes leader of New Labour I reckon it will damage their chances at the next election. Blair is Scottish too, but not obviously so, and his predecessor the Late Joihn Smith was Scottish. The Lib Dems’ Menzies Campbell and his predecessor Charles Kennedy are also Scottish.

In general, foreign nationals who have committed serious or medium-level crimes should be deported after serving their sentences.

There should be safeguards against them being returned to countries where they face undue persecution but to a certain extent it’s a case of ‘tough, they should have thought of that before they committed the…[Read more]
